This is the 2nd drama I've finished this break (Well, 3rd if you count SakiBoku but I don't count that in as I watched SakiBoku ongoing-ly~)

I honestly didn't expect much at first: I was just interested seeing more than 1 Arashi members + Tabe Mikako in a drama and also because the theme seemed cheerful, like I need something to heal my heart after watching Maou LOL
So ya, I went with YamaTaro and guess what, I couldn't stop watching and finished 9/10 episodes in one day (I really could've finished them in one day had my internet not lag, like it took me hours to finish episode 1 XD).t

Not going to mislead you, it really is a cheerful drama. But aside from cheerful, it also has a really simple-yet-sweet plot, which I didn't expect. Furthermore, all the characters are really well-written and each has a characteristic unique to themselves.

It really is a great drama that made me both laugh and cry, honestly!

As the title stated, the drama is literally a story about Yamada Tarou (played by Ninomiya Kazunari), who is a really poor high school student who got a scholarship to an elite high school, Ichinomiya. Having his bright prince-like persona and the fact that he was at the top of his grade, everyone at school assumed that he came from a rich family, without him even trying to create that image. While Yamada smiled at everyone anytime, the 2nd on the grade, Mimura Takuya (played by Sakurai Sho) emitted a cool quite prince persona, and he did come from a rich family. Together they become the rumoured top 2 princes on their grade.

Not trying to hide that fact, Yamada brought his simple stationeries to school(small pencils and used packaging as pencil case). Coincidentally sitting in front of him and seeing this, Mimura grew interested in Yamada's private life and became the first person who found out that he was actually really poor. Despite knowing that, Mimura become more and more interested in him that they become really close. Mimura realized that despite his financial struggle, The Yamada was still living happily as a family. And since that point on, he often directly/indirectly supported Yamada in his daily life.

Unlike Yamada who could be described as a transparent honest hard worker, Mimura was more of a mischievous tactician. He helped Yamada achieving his goals, which were mostly to make his family happy, yet on the way there, he often put some mischievous plot within his plan. Yamada always tried his best to make his family happy and this made Mimura sometimes did something not only for his own interest but just to make them smile.

Aside from "teasing" Yamada, he also kinda "orchestrated" Ikegami Takako's (played by Tabe Mikako) interaction with Yamada, realizing that she had a crush on Yamada. She initially wanted to marry a rich guy and when Yamada smiled at her, she believed that Yamada was the "prince" sent to her, making her pretty disappointed to find out that Yamada was poor. Yet, due to Mimura's indirect "guidance", she realized that she still liked Yamada despite him being poor and that being poor doesn't prevent one to be happy. From that point on, she started supporting Yamada and also helped him on some occasion.

Yes, I expected this to be a romance school drama, yet it actually is more of a family-ship and friendship drama. Ikegami was portrayed to be in love with Yamada for the third quarter of the episode. But as it progressed, she valued both Yamada and Mimura as friends and assisted their kinda reconciliation when they both were in a "cold war". She also helped Yamada on his air guitar competition along with Mimura to win a hamburger prize, which The Yamada kids have been longing to eat. That's a really interesting character development I didn't expect, which I really like!

This drama also reminds us that money cannot buy happiness. Mimura came from a rich family, yet he feels like he could feel relaxed being with Yamada. Not that being rich is bad, it's just sometimes the business creates some distance within family members, which happened to Mimura and his grandfather. Or even circumstances could add gap on the family, like what happened to Yamada when they moved into a huge house. Not that it's bad, it's just that sometimes, those things make the family communicate less, which loosen the family bond. This drama once again reminds us of how important communication is, especially with people dear to us, and how much one sentence spoken can lighten the burden in our hearts.

Ok, ending this cut, I'd like to introduce the character that grabbed my main attention in this drama. Meet Isogai Shitsuji (played by Ayata Toshiki)! As written there, Isogai is a butler of The Mimura, specifically serving Mimura Takuya. He is a really cute ojiichan character (Yes, say no more, I'm easily baited by kind ojiichan side-characters). Isogai would do anything to make his young smile that he was often teased by him in the past, and even at present while helping Yamada. When I say teased at present though, it was more of making him do things within his capability to help Yamada, like teaching him how to roleplay, or so. He often seems so happy when his young master is happy, and even dancing happily when The Mimura finally had a conversation, as grandfather and grandson. Honestly, he's a great man!

Yamada Tarou Monogatari really exceeded my expectation. Not a typical school drama that simply revolves around school and mostly romance, YamaTaro carries a lot of simple-yet-deep life lessons:
1. Communication is important, whether it's with friends or family.
2. No matter how hard the life is, as long as you're working to make those whom you care for happy, the hard work will pay off.
3. Taken from The Yamada's Rules, combined together: even small things can make you smile as long as you can see the value in it.

Ya honestly, I didn't expect myself to cry watching this drama, but the family parts really touched my heart that I actually cried XDD
In nutshell, Yamada Tarou Monogatari is a great drama!
